SUMMARY
The Employment and Training Specialist will provide employment and training services to TANF clients at the Squaxin Island TANF site. This position will: assist with the development of Family Success Plans; develop and facilitate other training as needed; prepare materials for instruction and job training activities; provide support and coordination to client’s with GED completion and post secondary education such as vocational and/or training programs; and assist clients with work search as needed, developing on-the-job training (OJT) and work experience (WEX) opportunities as appropriate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Other duties may be assigned)

Provides employment and training services to TANF clients.

Assists TANF staff with the development of individual education and training plans which provide guidance for clients to reach their education and training goals.

Provides training services to clients.

Develops and facilitates orientation and other trainings as needed.

Provides instructions to individuals in small groups with an emphasis on work force preparation and retention.

Prepares materials for classroom and instructional use; administers, corrects and records progress, participation and other necessary student information for records.

Assists and/or coordinates with students in pre-testing, preparation, and testing for GED.

Assists and coordinates with students in gaining access and assistance to post secondary education and training programs.

Advises TANF case managers regularly of client’s progress and program participation.

Updates case notes related to client progress on a regular basis.

Assists clients in work search.

Keeps current on local employment and training opportunities; advises clients and case managers of potential opportunities; develops and facilitates a job club.

Facilitates employment training events.

In coordination with the Human Resources Department, develops OJT and Work Experience (WEX) opportunities; place clients and monitor progress.

Maintains strict confidentiality of all client information related to TANF.

Coordinates TANF client participation in cultural events as directed.

Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

The applicant must have demonstrated experience with effective classroom and/or group teaching.

The applicant must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
Computer proficiency with a minimum of three years of experience using Microsoft Office is required.

The successful applicant must have the ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others. One year of experience working with Native American communities is preferred.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelors Degree in Education, Social Work or related field and one year of relevant experience providing employment and training services to adult population. OR Associates of Arts Degree in Education, Social Services or related field and three years of relevant experience providing employment and training services to adult population. OR High School Diploma or GED and five years of relevant experience providing employment and training services to adult population.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Washington State Driver’s License; proof of insurance.

This position will require employee to work frequently near moving mechanical parts. The noise level for this position is generally moderate.
